Adding and Steeping Specialty Grains

Specialty grains add color, flavor and body to most of our beer kits. Here are a few things to remember when using them:

  • Tie the muslin bag at the top so you don't compress the grains
  • Steep between 140 and 160 degrees F
  • Steep for 30 minutes
  • Don't squeeze the bag when you're done, squeezing can extract tannins
  • Use your spent grains in baking or for compost if you can
